Compare storage types

"Storage" can mean very different things. Here's an honest look at the three main options around Huddersfield — and which one we offer.

At a glance

The disadvantage of traditional storage is that you can't pop in and out to access your goods. The trade-off is that everything else is handled for you — and protected.

We've left outdoor metal shipping containers out of this comparison — it's extremely hard to get legitimate insurance cover for storage like that, so we don't consider it an acceptable option.

The three options explained

Self storage

Self storage is usually like traditional storage, but often more expensive — and members of the public can walk within a few centimetres of your padlocked room. Units come in fixed sizes, frequently after a long walk or carry to reach them, and many have mesh roofs that offer little protection from dust or even a leaky roof above.

The most worrying drawback: once your furniture is moved in and the unit is locked, the company that did the removal no longer carries any responsibility for damage — and the same applies on the way out. Because you've had access throughout, anything could have happened in that time.

What Bellwoods offers

Traditional storage

Traditional storage is one of the oldest forms of storage and still the most common around Huddersfield. Your furniture is given its own independent space in our secure warehouse, stacked professionally to avoid indentation marks and surface damage, and in a way that lets it breathe. Everything is then completely covered with industrial dust sheets made for the job, so there's no chance of cross-contamination.

The big advantage: we accept liability throughout the whole journey — removal in, storage, and removal out. Because only we have had access to your furniture, you're fully protected under our terms and conditions. The only trade-off is that you can't access your goods while they're in store.*

Containerised storage

Usually the most expensive option. A typical container is around 250 cu ft (about 7 cubic metres) — which sounds a lot, but works out to roughly 5ft wide × 5ft long × 10ft tall. A typical 3-bedroom house can need five or more containers. At, say, £15 + VAT each per week, you're already at £75 + VAT a week, before any liability cover or insurance.

Containerised storage usually isn't climate-controlled either — there's little point when everything sits in sealed wooden boxes with no natural airflow.

* This assumes you've chosen to use our liability cover. If you choose to insure your goods yourself, we can't accept liability.
